Discover the Wor(l)d

Himalayan Torchbearers offers a 7 week program that combines Bible study, exploring
world religions and Indian culture and having adventures in the Himalayas.

Course Summary

The 7 week Discover the Wor(l)d program is a chance to learn about different religions of India,  discover opportunities to serve, examine one's own relationship with God and grow in faith.

Being in a new country presents many challenges from which to grow as a person. Learn through experience about the culture, customs, religion and living out your faith in India. You will gain a new perspective on life!

The DTW course focuses on 4 main things:

In-depth Bible studies

There will be weekly lecturers teaching classes every weekday from the Bible. The lecturers are a blend of well known Christian leaders who will teach on a specific topic for a week each.

Inter-religious studies

Every week we also focus on one of the major religions of India. We start with Hinduism and work our way through New Age, Buddhism, Sikhism, Islam, Jainism and Zoroastrianism. We believe that understanding the faiths of other people is vital as the world becomes smaller and our neighbours and friends can be from different backgrounds and faiths. We finish off every week with a visit to a religious site that corresponds to the religion we have studied.

Cultural studies

Throughout the course you will be exposed to a lot of different aspects of the Indian culture. This will not happen sitting in the classroom but as students interact and build relationships with local people. Interspersed in the course we include at least one camping trek in the Himalayas and if there are festivals or weddings we take our students to those as well.

Children's Ministry

Every week our course participants help out at one of Torchbearers' 4 primary schools. As part of the program, participants will create a lesson with moral value which they would share with the elementary school students through different creative means (Drama, Artwork, Story time etc).

"India is vastly different. Once you get to know the people here, you see they have such a beautiful heart and a desire to serve others." - Luke

"This experience has definitely made me think about what I believe and why I believe it. and strengthened my personal faith in God" - Ruth
